If you need to equip yourself or perhaps one of your children with fishing tackle you may be tempted to buy one of the ‘beginner’s fishing kits’ that you see advertised in mail order catalogues and non-specialist high street shops.
While these definitely fit the description of ‘cheap fishing tackle’, in the main they are not cheap at all when you consider what they contain. Quite apart from the fact that they usually contain poor quality rods, reels and other items, they are usually more expensive than buying those same items individually.
Even kits that have quite reasonable rods and reels are often let down by the other parts of the package, and you will almost certainly do better if you buy the particular items you need separately.
There are some exceptions, usually kits put together by established fishing tackle manufacturers who generally don’t make or sell poor quality tackle and these do contain quite good quality components suitable for someone new to fishing. Unlike the cheap poor quality kits, you wont need to add too many extra items to have a good quality and complete fishing set up.
