Before deciding what fishing rod(s) you need, consider where you are planning to fish, and what fish you are likely to catch.
Although there are many specialist types of fishing rod, many aimed at anglers who are targeting large specimens at one end of the scale, and for different match fishing situations at the other, the ‘pleasure’ angler needs general purpose tackle.
What that means is you need fishing rods designed to catch fish of many different sizes from a few ounces up to several pounds if the water you intend to fish has been stocked with carp, which many have.
The type of fishing you intend to do will also dictate the rod(s) you need. Unless you intend to exclusively fish one venue and style at first, you would do well to be prepared to either float fish or leger. That either means buying two rods; one for float fishing and one for legering, or a dual purpose rod that had different sections to allow it to be used for either. Such rods are often described as Avon/Quivers. These are designed as general purpose rods and will handle a wide range of fishing situations and sizes of fish.
An Avon/Quiver rod of about 11ft will be fine for both float fishing and legering, but if you get both a float and leger rod, a float rod of about 12ft and a leger rod of about 10ft is a good combination.
